Wafer in her Jar

I am not so hungry

I do not crave something sweet

But my memory brings a pang

And I know what I want to eat

I am thinking of a lady

The finest one by far

She always had a smile for me

And a wafer in her jar

Why didn’t anyone tell me?

That her time was nigh

To say my last farewell

To kiss her face goodbye

To thank her for her love

To show my appreciation

To treasure in the memory

Of a favorite relation

I know I would have been there

To help her through her final pain

I know I would have been there

If I could have that time again

I received the words of sorrow

With full glass and a shoulder cold

I will never forget the saddest day

And the way that I was told

A lady in the highest right

She never did me wrong

She gave me life She gave me time

And she let me tag along

She took me on her travels

We visited every place

Now it’s hard to make a return

For I miss her cherished face

We cannot rewrite history

We hope to learn from our mistakes

Don’t rely on others

Do everything it takes

For chances should be respected

So in tribute to my Nanna

Forever I will hunger

For that wafer in her jar

Author's Notes/Comments:

Although it has been nearly 20 years since my Nans passing I still miss her and I treasure the good times we had.
