candy dispenser

he made them so lovingly.

one for each of us,

simple candy dispensers

filled with rainbow colors.

one for each of us

complete with gold name plates,

filled with rainbow colors,

and pretty red felt.

complete with gold name plates,

he made each one unique.

mine has pretty red felt

with a small blue and red flower.

he made each one unique-

a sentimental side he never showed:

a small blue and red flower

and carefully sanded edges.

a sentimental side never shown

is displayed in artful craftsmanship:

carefully sanded edges,

a hand-carved shaft and base.

a display of artful craftsmanship

hid hours of painful labor,

the hand-carved shaft and base

never revealing sweat or tears.

hidden hours of painful labor,

he believed in hard work.

never revealing sweat or tears,

he enjoyed a more simple life.

he always believed in hard work,

but he made this so lovingly.

he enjoyed a simple life;

as simple as a candy dispenser.

Author's Notes/Comments:

this is an homage to my grandfather, who left us far too soon this past December.  I know it's not a fantastic poem, but it is the first time since his death that I've tried expressing my feelings about it.  So, comment if you'd like.  I'd be happy to hear what you have to say.
