I saw your picture,
On the internet.
It seems like there are not too many,
The same Halloween shot
On every site.
A picture taken at school.
My god you were beautiful.
They fired a few from child protection,
Your mom and step dad,
Are facing trial.
Your siblings are in foster care,
While everyone fights,
Over who loves who the most.
No one asks the question,
Where were they for you?
My heart is crying,
I can’t imagine being there,
And not saving you
Lost to all of us,
Is one little girl,
No one saved, no one loved.
Hundreds came for your funeral.
The Marines were even there.
All too late I fear…
I hope heaven is all they say,
And there you finally,
Are free to play.
And for once be a little girl,
Without a care in the world.
Though they broke your body,
I hope your spirit remains strong.
I hope you know,
There are so many people,
You never knew,
That wish they were there,
To save you.
Oh my God. This is so sad and powerful. This brings tears to my eyes. I will never understand how one can be so cruel to a child.
In such a situation, not even the death penalty seems adequate. Unless . . . it was a very "medieval" death (and those medieval folks knew how to devise a death). Despite the horror of the situation described in the poem, this is a beautiful elegy to the slain child.
Starward
This is tragic and very sad, but you did such a good job of expressing your feelings. I loved the flow of the poem, and the structure, the words you used brought it to life. Thankyou so much for the wondeful comment on my poem, I really look forward to you reading them.
