Forgive me for raising a contrary question, but when we begin to say what lives matter the most, is there not, as a logical consequence, an automatic and disturbing implication that certain lives must, therefore, matter less?---then the next logical step is a set of lives that matter least. Then not at all. And when we reach that point, we have returned to the savage state of affairs to which another nation was led by a loud-mouth housepainter, among whose ambitions were gas chambers and crematory ovens of industrial capacity. Whether what you have written constitutes a poem or not must be decided by other readers; but when I read your words, I hear the distinct echo of some other words not included among yours: Auschwitz, Belzec, Treblinka.
