China Knot

Icy clutches against warm skins,
   sing-song language on frozen ears.
Tired eyes careless to foreign scenes,
howling winds outside that no one hears.

Cold February air shocked my lungs,
as I inhaled winds of winter.
Thin midnight haze in Beijing hangs,
shrouding cabs which were sought after.

Travel weary visitors,
tried so hard to be understood.
Bright lights gave way to dark sectors,
as our cab ate the miles it could.

Daylight brought anticipation,
like the usual high in new lands.
The town was bursting with activities,
as people poured out in the streets.

Food booths lined the busy sidewalks,
   displaying authentic staple foods.
I had such fun, especially for the talks,
done in signs I've mastered for good.

Each visit to the temples of old,
bared stories of Buddha so sightly.
I was lost among tourist fold,
   invading the Forbidden City.

My Kingdom of Heaven stroll,

had me thinking of the One above all.
Climb on the Jinshanling Great Wall,

eluded the words I tried to will.

My crisis in language spoken,

shrunk as I absorbed various cultures.
The Chinese were friendly and keen,
as they read my funny gestures.

I can't recall of other times,
I so laughed from my travels.
Or smile in remembrance sometimes,
on how my clumsy sketches pierced.

Recalling brought a strange mixture
of feelings I care to think not.
An emotional crisis for sure,
    my memorable China knot...

Author's Notes/Comments:

My 2010 Beijing China visit was such a fun experience. My companions and I stayed at the Miyun district and most__ almost all, except the hotel concierge and front desk clerks, cannot speak or understand English. We pointed menu pictures in making our orders in restaurants or draw foods we wanted if pictures were not available. When we shopped, we wrote figures to bargain and got by with gestures and a lot of nods and smiles.
I found the whole experience funny because in the end, we stopped speaking our limited English and just talked in our native tongue when communicating since it mattered little anyway.
Like the rest of us Asians, the Chinese are very patient hospitable people. They went out of their way to communicate with us through drawings and sign languages too. Did their best to cater to us and in return, we got a lot of smiles and nods as well.
I so enjoyed China and its people! I can't wait to visit again.

Wow, Shye , I felt like I went to China with you in this........

so beautifully written so many original lines too. It seems I under appreciated your talent you really shone in this one. Stunning depiction of your trip to China. I hope you attempt to write of other places you have visited. Was visually exquisite. Thanks for sharing. Good to see you on. Glad you are doing well, I guess you are slaying those Kings, knights, and rooks in the chess rooms eh? If so keep it up. I look forward to reading more of your latest stuff. Don't forget us here at pp.
Sincerely, your friend Melissa Lundeen................

Melissa!!! So good to catch

Melissa!!! So good to catch you here my friend... Your Brandishing Charm poem, had me inspired... I'm so happy for you... One more person who found real inspiration and meaning is one less lonely poet like me ( lol ). I have my butt kicked everyday at chess.com so here I am, ruffling my feathers with poetries... Thank you for dropping by to see me... I have written about few other places I visited, but feel they need major editing like most works here... So I am trying very hard indeed, to curve my impulsivity from writing my drafts here! Lol

Thank you Melissa...
