On the 4th of July

I love to see a grand parade

and feel the warmth of sacred trust

as Old Glory passes by - held high,

why do some trample it in the dust?

Fireworks can be sparks of raw emotion.

Like pirate ships on heaven's ocean.

They strike at awe and demand attention.

They climax a day of grand intention.

We ought to hold this day as sacred.

It is a birthday to be respected.

As we have aged and grown bolder

and boy scouts wear a flag on their shoulder,

Do we, in turn respect that flag?

Do trust and honor sometimes lag

behind the thrill of gamebox fun?

Who's out there marching?  Anyone?

Our veterans gave a life of service.

Some died to preserve our purpose.

Our freedom is a precious gift.

Let's not leave our flag arift!

On this day I pledge to be

a defender of democracy.

Our forefathers fought to

keep us free.

This is called "Independence Day."

Freedom from tyranny and dismay.

We enjoy its heritage, everyday,

Let's keep our hope on grand display!
