A Day At The Zoo
Yesterday I took my little brother to the zoo. He is only six years-old and since I entered the medical school I haven’t been able to spend quality time with him. But now I’m on summer vacation and I’d like to make up to him. It’s very difficult to convince my mom to let Juan Pi go out with me, you see, she worries too much and she thinks that I might not be qualified to take care of a child. She says I get distracted easily but I mean, come on I want to be a pediatrician, still it’s not really a good argument for her. After hours of discussion I finally convinced her to let me take out my brother for a day of adventure so I thought the zoo may be a good place to learn a little bit and have some fun together. She agreed and asked me to be back home at 3:00 pm but I told her we should be back in just a couple of hours.
We arrived at the zoo around 11:00 o’clock in the morning. It was a hot day, but we were ready to have fun. The first thing we did was buy some nuts so we could feed the animals. After that we ran to see the giraffes, Juan Pi was amazed by their long necks and how they tried to reach us to eat some nuts. Then we went on to visit the lions, we thought they were beautiful and majestic creatures and we stood there for a long time just watching them walk and roar around. After the lions I took my brother to watch my favorite animal in the whole wide world: the pandas. Even though they don’t do much, I really love pandas. I mean, which animal can just don’t do anything and be beautiful and adorable as pandas? They just eat some bamboo and you already fall in love with them.
After the pandas we got a snack and continued with the trip. We went to watch the rhinos and the elephants, and then moved on to visit the tigers and later on the zebras. After the zebras my brother asked me if we could see the apes, I agreed and we ran to their cage. We were watching the apes eat their bananas and hang around the tree inside their cage when suddenly I felt a hand over my shoulder, I turned around to find out it was Andrea, a friend of mine I haven’t seen in years. We started talking and catching up, she told me she was there with her boyfriend who just came back from an exchange year in Belgium. We were so into the chat that for an instant I forgot about Juan Pi, I turned around just to check on him but he was nowhere to be found. I frightened a little and I started calling his name. “Juan Pi, Juan Pi!” I shouted but there was no response.
Suddenly Andrea told me: “Valeria don’t get scared but, turn around. Isn’t that your little brother?” I turned around really slow and screamed. My little brother was inside the apes’ cage! How the heck did he get in there? I asked my friend to find help and she called the zoo guard, he told me that we should call the zoo animal keepers to see what we can do to take him out. I waited there while I watched the ape mom hold my brother as one of her offsprings trying to feed him up. I yelled to my brother not to move or try to run away because she could get scared and may hurt him. He obeyed me and just stood there, with the ape mom holding him tight. The zoo animal keepers arrived as soon as possible and told me that this was a very rare situation and that they would try to deceive the ape mom in order to take my brother out. They were trying to take him out when I received a call, it was my mom! Obviously I didn’t answer, I mean, what was I supposed to say? Hello mom my brother is being kidnapped by an ape? No thanks.
After several attemps they took out Juan Pi and all the people started to clap, I was just so happy to have him with me safe and sound. I drove back home and my mother told me: “Didn’t you said you would be here in a couple of hours? What happened?” I was about to tell her everything when suddenly it was all on the news. Obviously she got mad and grounded me. Now I’m not able to take out my brother again unless I have adult supervision.
