Not til 2 and l/2 years after the Emancipation Proclamation,
did African American slaves in Galveston Texas realize
that they were free.. when General Granger finally announced
it to them. Now 200 cities in Texas celebrate the state
holiday. Now that day is commemorated as June Teenth.
