At Pudens' Reading Of Martial's Poems

Eubulus greeteth thee, and Pudens,

and Linus, and Claudia, and all the brethren.

---2 Timothy 4:21

Martial likes puzzles of idenity.

Some of his verses briefly mention me;

some of them mention a centurion

who shares, with me, only a given name.

But, I assure you, we are not the same.

His bellicose vocation is not one

I share.  He thinks himself an eager son

of Roman legions and, also, of Mars.

I am a son of faith---not long begun---

in Christ, Who filled the night sky with its stars;

Christ Jesus, Lord, Whose Light outshines the sun.

Starward
