At An Obscure Library, Near On

[after Genesis 41:45]

"He watched the sun rise over Thebes and found

The Lord of Love whose footprints star the night; . . .

He dawns upon the world's horizon crowned

Like living Aton, beautiful with light."

---Thomas S. Jones, Jr., "Akhnaton" (lines 3-4, 7-8)

I found an ancient book upon a shelf,
pushed back, concealed, behind the other scrolls;
covered with such accumulated dust
that seemed to form a hardened, shell-like crust
I reached for it, and knocked the dust away.
This chamber might not be known to priests' wrath,
providing a shelter in which to cram
this:  Joseph's God, The God Of Abraham,
bearing the signature of Asenath.
The text has changed what I believe and say:
I think that Joseph's God, whom I now trust,
appears as Aton's disc, giving each day
to us.  As Pharaoh, I shall guide myself
by this faith and teach it to other souls.
