GUS GUS THE HIPPOPOTAMUS
(T. Beechey)
I want to tell you 'bout a friend of mine
He's not like us, but that's just fine
None of us are just like him
But we're all the same when we go for a swim
In the lake or when we run
All over the woods in the noonday sun
I want you to meet one of my pals
So gather 'round, guys and gals!
Let me tell you 'bout Gus, Gus
The hippopotamus
He never caused trouble
Never made a fuss
When he went to school
He always rode the bus
And his best friend
Was a rabbit named Russ
Russ and Gus were the best of friends
They played together on the weekends
Building treehouses, digging holes
Chasing all the mice and moles
All of a sudden, on a summer's day
Russ told Gus he was moving away
Gus told Russ that he was sad
And he'd miss all the fun they had
I'm talkin' 'bout Gus, Gus
The hippopotamus
He doesn't cheat
And he doesn't cuss
When he went to school
He once got an A-plus
And his best friend
Was a rabbit named Russ
Well, Russ moved away with his family
And Gus went out to look and see
If he could find another friend
And down by the river where the willows bend
He met Terry Toad and Frannie Frog
Bobby Bear and Donny Dog
“Would you like to play?” asked Gus Gus
“Yes,indeed!” they said,”everyone of us!”
Did you hear 'bout Gus, Gus
The hippopotamus
He never caused trouble
Never made a fuss
When he went to school
He always rode the bus
And his best friend
Was a rabbit named Russ
One day, Gus Gus was sweeping the floor
When there came a knock upon his door
He opened up the door real wide
And Russ the rabbit hopped inside
“My parents said I could come and stay
“For the weekend, do you want to play?”
Russ dropped his broom. “Yes, I do!
“And you can meet my other friends, too!”
And that's the story 'bout Gus, Gus
The hippopotamus
He's like you and me
And all of us
He's out playing with his friends
Like he always does
For no other reason
But because
