A STEP CLOSER
(T. Beechey)
In all sincerity, it's a little hard to handle
Channel after channel, one more tale unfolds
Of a soldier giving all for his God and country
But would God really want this soul to grow cold?
Sometimes I wonder what's the reason he kept going
It's knowing there's a Promise waiting in a Promised Land
And so I'll bide my time until my name is uttered
Through the fluttering of angels' wings --- Savior, take my Hand
Each day's a step closer to You, Lord
I'm looking forward to redemption that's found within your Name
And I came full circle just to be reunited
With the Light that surrounds and accepts without blame
As I look around me, all I ever find is sorrow
With tomorrows never brighter as the day before
There's war and there's suffering by those so undeserving
What purpose is served and why are they ignored?
Their cries fill the air, yet no one ever listens
In the distance, only gunfire echoes the refrain
As another rain of anguish falls down in torrents
Unwarranted and this thought helps to keep me sane
Each day's a step closer to You, Lord
I'm looking forward to redemption that's found within your Name
And I came full circle just to be reunited
With the Light that surrounds and accepts without blame
I pick up the paper and I read the awful headlines
The signs are apparent even to the blind
Still I find no comfort in the news that's reported
I've sorted through the notions that are racing through my mind
But there's no explanation that can satisfy my wonder
Why's the thunder of a battle now a youngster's lullaby?
I've tried to understand, but each turn of the pages
Cause the rages to embellish and so I voice this cry:
Each day's a step closer to You, Lord
I'm looking forward to redemption that's found within your Name
And I came full circle just to be reunited
With the Light that surrounds and accepts without blame
