THE ROAD
(T. Beechey)
The road only goes a little bit farther, just up the hill and around the bend
You can keep on going, but why even bother? All that awaits you is a dead end
I've watched them come, all different ages
Each with a plan and a head full of dreams
And as they passed through each of life's stages
One by one, they grew out their seams
That footprint that you're about to step in?
A traveler came through the other day
The puddle's his tears that he wept in
When he realized he ran out of way
The road only goes a little bit farther, just up the hill and around the bend
You can keep on going, but why even bother? All that awaits you is a dead end
So many promises --- each one greater
Just needing one chance to be fulfilled
And as each sooner turned to later
Each one's hopes were silently stilled
Do you see that shadow along the trail?
The one where sunlight does not shine?
That's another traveler whose journey failed
And I know it well because it's mine
The road only goes a little bit farther, just up the hill and around the bend
You can keep on going, but why even bother? All that awaits you is a dead end
I was like you, ready and eager
To take on the world and leave my mark
Buit I came to see my efforts were meager
So here I stand alone in the dark
I watched them come, all different ages
Each with a clear destination in mind
And all that remains are unfinished pages
For the next passerby to find
The road only goes a little bit farther, just up the hill and around the bend
You can keep on going, but why even bother? All that awaits you is a dead end
