THAT DADDY OF MINE
(T. Beechey)
He lived in the hills in a shotgun shack
Nothin' fancy,no frills --- just the clothes on his back
His name was Ray,folks called him "Guy"
Most of them couldn't say "R-A-Y"
Some said he was dumb, but he was smart
His knowledge came from his soul and heart
The ship Daddy ran sailed smooth and fine
He was quite a man, that daddy of mine
He'd walk to town,eighteen miles
Didn't get him down,he was all smiles
His books were few, never watched TV
Which was hard to do without 'lectricity
He had four dogs and trained them well
They once chased a hog right down the well!
He ate dinner from a can, drank homemade wine
He was quite a man, that daddy of mine
He'd make a couch from spools of thread
Always had Mail Pouch comin' out his head
He fought in the war,got a medal well-earned
Never settled the score, far as he was concerned
He was always hummin' "O Sole Mio"
You'd hear him comin' for a block or so
His bed was a pan and a ball of twine
He was quite a man, that daddy of mine
He never learned to read or write his name
But he planted a seed and his family came
One by one till there was eight
Two daughters, three sons, set of twins and Kate
Kate was his love, his entire life
He'd speak fondly of his precious wife
My mom was Nan,left me at age nine
He was quite a man, that daddy of mine
He stood six foot five in stockin' feet
And he stayed alive till he came to meet
A movin' truck on the wrong side
Ran out of luck and that's how he died
At his makeshift grave, two twigs for a cross
We solemnly gave prayers for our loss
The lives he began,to this day,shine...
He was quite a man, that daddy of mine
