Manufactured, never born
His only reason to exist was existence
The experience of assumption
That he was indeed alive
But somewhere in the factory
The system went awry
Circuits were cracked, wires were crossed
Sentience introduced to the hive
-And he was saddled with an unenviable task
But one which only he could fulfill
And they said:
"Go forth, created son
Our mistake shall be our gain
Learn what life is, the nature of living
Pleasure, pain...feel, feel....
Live."
So he was jettisoned from that place
Into the black bowl of the universe
No specific destination
Other than where he'd end up
And after hundred of years in space
With loneliness his only companion
His vessel caught land on a blue planet
At the bottom of the cup
-And he set out on his assignment
The one he could fulfill
And he remembered the words of his fathers:
"Go forth, created son
Our mistake shall be our gain
Learn what life is, the nature of living
Pleasure, pain...feel, feel....
Live."
He came upon a grey stone
Jutting from the ground
He touched the stone, and loved the stone
But it never loved him back
This made him sad, but he recognized
This being could not communicate
So he believed it did, in fact, love him
And so he stayed as the sky turned black
And darkness covered the whole planet
And the stars gathered in the sky
And under the stars, a firefly came
Trying to compete with heaven
And he saw the firefly, and soon forgot the rock
He fell in love with this earthbound starchild
It's blinking and winking, he knew,
An odd "I love you" in his mind made even
So he followed the firefly until it landed
And never flew again
Its light that once burned bright was gone
If he'd had the ducts, he'd have cried
"Love is temporary, I suppose...
But what do about it?
I am a permanent fixture in the universe
Unfeeling yet in love."
So he sat and waited for a long while
Until he happened upon his old faithful rock
It couldn't love him back
But at least it would always be there.
