Counting Again

I count your lies like sheep
Each one over my head
Until my mind becomes numb
And I drift off to dreams
You play tricks on me there
You tell me you care

Smiling, I hold your head to my chest
Your hair tickling my neck
A twinkle in your eye as you look up
Shows you're smiling too
Inexplicable comfort I feel
Strong, yet so soft

So many times I'd save you
From lava and from quake
From war and from drake
Fighting for you, til the sun bleeds anew
Its light of reality seeping through eyes shut tight
But never tight enough

So, moonlit dream takes flight
Chasing cruel night, with no trail to follow
Left behind to tend to your flocks
I know them all, but I'll count just once more
Now I don my cloak of forgetful shadows
Until the darkness again consumes them
