We came from dear old Ireland
in the year of eighteen thirty two
we came over on a big ship
and rugged was the crew
We were going to the new world
to start over once again
and we were leaving home and family
and all of our best friends
That big ship was docked
in Dublin's deep dark bay
amd we loaded all of our things on
and it took most of the day
My mother was a crying
and I felt so very sad
for I was leaving my dear Paddy
the sweetest of the lads
But Poppa said that we must go
to try life once again
for the dreaded of all famines
hadn't left us with a fen
All the people were just dying
and lay there in the street
and there were many many thousands
that had nothing left to eat
And we left in that great big ship
painted grey and blue
and the captain said we'd make it
for this ship was all brand new
We were six weeks on the ocean
where the waves were wild and high
and we were all so very sick
we prayed that we would die
the food was moldy hardtack
and pleanty of beans
with a small piece of meat
and a portion of raw fruit
not really much to eat
and we surely all knew
that this voyage wasn't very grand
but early one cool morning
a sailor with a spy glass
shoughted
"I see land'
We were all so very happy
and we stood out on the deck
to get a glimpse of New York City
that to us looked like a speck
We were met at those great big docks
by my Poppa's oldest brother
who had with him, his wife and son
all of his friends and his mother
Oh we came over to the new world
to start our life anew
where we'd all get a good job
and our troubles would be few
We came on that big ship
they called Sweet Lorilee
and we will always remember
that trip across the sea
There are many many big ships
and lots of small ones too
There are ships that cross the ocean's
there are ships that cross the sea
but I remember only one
the ship that carried me
