She came to the house one cold winter's night
and cried at the door to get in
I peeked out the window to see what was there
at this sad little bundle, so meowing and thin
She was soggy and wet, a pitiful sight
two popped out eyes and grey fur
she was shivering and cold, and I knew she was hungry
and I felt really sorry for her
I did not want a cat, but what could I do
I just couldn't let her stay there
outside my door, shivering and cold
for to me, that didn't seem fair
I opened the door, she politely waiked in
and then she looked up to me as to say
I don't have a home and I really could use one
and I'm hoping that you'll just let me stay
A bowl of warm milk, she devoured at once
then she started in softly to purr
she was warmed by the fire, and her tummy was full
and I wondered what next would occur
And as I sat by the fire, in my own comfy chair
she crawled up beside me for a nap
well, I looked at her then, so fluffy and clean
and I thought, What a cute little cat
But lo and behold, she jumped down from my chair
then she walked straight to the door
she looked back and cried, then patiently waited
just like she had done once before
I let her out and then went off to bed
and I thought of her, t'was the last I would see
then a commotion so loud, woke me up in the night
I think it was along about three
My heart leaped in my throat, and I jumped to the floor
and turned on the light for to see
I looked out the window, and thought to myself
my goodness, this just cannot be
for there sat the cat, so calm and serene
right in front of the door
but this time she brought family, and I think to stay
as I looked at her kittens, numbering four
Well, now we're a family, now we are six
the cat, four kittens and me
so I buy their cat food, bathe each of them
and most often, I'm searching for flea's
So if you hear a scratch on the door, late at night
good heavens, just let it be
it may be a stray cat, and all of her babies
and they'll be hungry, just take it from me
I'm with you on this one, 2
I'm with you on this one, 2 cats have arrived on my doorstep, 2 handed to me by a neighbour who didn't want them, and 2 brought home by my daughter while working in a cats home!! very sweet poem, :-) x
