Oh how well she did remember
the day the photo had been done
t'was the last day they were together
for he was off to World War one
now she sat looking at the photo
to her it was so dear
she held it now with trembling hands
and slowly shed a tear
The old frame was bent and tarnished
and the photo faded dim
to her tho, it was so beautiful
for the photo was of him
Oh, it had been so bright and beautiful
on the day he went away
but when he kissed her there goodbye
it had turned to misty grey
Now her eyes were almost blind
and she could hardly see
and tho she doesn't see the photo well
she still sends an anguished plea
Dear Lord would he stil love me
if he could see me here today
for I am old and wrinkled with grey hair
that I didn't have the day he went away
Oh, I am old and bent and shabby
and have age spots on my hands
do you think he'd still care for me
do you think he'd understand
But he looked just as handsome
beneath that picture glass
as he did that day, in his uniform of blue
posed beside the sailor's mast
There was no wrinkle in his brow
not a hair was out of place
there was a twinkle in his eye
and a faint smile on his face
She looked on gold and wavy hair
and eyes of deepest blue
and freckles across a strong straight nose
and a smile that said, I love you
And oh, she did remember
their last farewell goodbye
and he told her that he cared for her
and then he went away to die
Now she held the photo
and kissed his handsome face
as she placed it back into the trunk
into it's proper place
Absolutely beautiful.
Absolutely beautiful. Reminded me of 'the titanic' movie.
...loved it.
...and he asked her, "do you write poetry? Because I feel as if I am the ink that flows from your quill."
"No", she replied, "but I have experienced it. "
