Thirteen Acts of Faith

I.

At age six, I used to sneak

A pen into the pew.

I'd doodle during the sermon.

II.

At age eleven, I read the Bible.

Only one book held my interest,

Because it was about the End.

III.

A satanist came in the other day.

She bought skulls, knives, and pentagrams

Using money that read "In God We Trust".

IV.

There was an elders meeting.

Downstairs, the pastor's daughter

Gave head to a random boy.

V.

Every night before sleep, it appears

That I am talking to myself.

But some days, I get answers.

VI.

People joke about what they want

God to say to them at the "pearly gates",

Counting eggs before they hatch.

VII.

Faith is our intangible drug.

Some people don't see any need,

Others wouldn't be alive without it.

VIII.

As a boy, he had invisible friends.

But as he grew, he realized it was silly.

Adults do the same thing.

IX.

At age 19, I didn't need a pen,

And I didn't read a book.

My solution was staying in bed.

X.

So, what do you want him to say

When he greets you at the gates?

Five dollar cover charge, please.

XI.

We are given black and white.

We're the ones who create grey areas.

Does this work for everyone?

XII.

Sighing, relieved, hatched -

I can cover five dollars.

In God I trust.

XIII.

How will I be saved?

Talking to no one in the dark,

Or sitting on a bench, patiently listening?
