We have nine turtles (terrestrial and aquatic), three dogs, and many fish; Mom has always appreciated nature and all of its animals. She loves all of her creatures profoundly... however, one receives more affection than any of the others: a giant of a dog, capable of devouring my brother's and my dog with a single, effortless bite, even though she is only a puppy. Fortunately, she considers them brothers and companions, meant for wrestling and bullying, not so much for a meal. Her name is Keyla; She was a gift from my father, maybe because the house feels lonely without my brother and I, maybe to serve as future guard, with the characteristically large size and menacing appearance of the breed, or maybe it was because she was the only one left of a litter of puppies from an old mother, too tired and no longer capable of caring for her. Whatever the reason was, Keyla, a dogo de Bordeaux puppy brimming with life, came into my family. Just seeing her, who wouldn't wonder: what dog wouldn’t like a date with a tan, curvy, green-eyed girl? She is as strong as an old big dog with her 4 months of life, weighing twenty or more kilos yet has those innocent eyes, which all dogs have. Mom cares for her as if she were a child. Keyla and my mom share many funny and healthy walks, they have waged fierce battles against bigger dogs and have been friends since the moment they met. They are two halves of a whole that coincidently found their way together. The first time I saw Keyla, she was so small, covered in fluffy newborn fur. Starting to run, she was like a baby deer learning to walk, throwing one foot forward in step only to fall over and over again. Mom had patience, while I thought she was old enough to run without falling. She was a harmonic balance of cuteness and intimidation. What makes Keyla so special is her uncanny ability to make your day happy, no matter how bad or boring. Unfailingly, she waits for her owner by the front door, leash in mouth, ready to distract you from the day's disappointments with a walk. Her capacity for destruction is impressive. In a single moment she can destroy a home, digging crater-sized holes in the earth, uprooting flowers and tracking mud-covered paws into the house. My mom scolds her like a naughty child, making it clear she has done wrong, and Keyla looks directly at her with green eyes that say, “I’m sorry, but I will pretend I don’t know what you are talking about and I will do it again”.
