@ 27.055 MHz: Ad Astra; Edward VI In 1551

[for Edward M---, artist, and in memory of

our friendship, February, 1994 through

April, 2000]

My cunning grandfather's brothers-in-law

were adolescent boys, also, like me---

with needs for Love of certain quality

(and, at this stage of life, in quantity;

it is not choice; rather, given by nature

despite old prudes' prejudiced nomenclature,

or haters' slanders, or court jesters' slights;

all of which constitutes cowards' abuse).

Their uncle, Richard, gave them liberty,

in sheltered places that no prying foes

or peeping perverts ever could discover.

there, each of them met, and embraced, a lover,

and dwelt in happiess monogamy).

I wonder if, like me, they disliked shoes;

and spent their leisured hours, through days and nights,

shirtless, and clad only in supple tights---

opaquely smooth and soft from waist to toes.

Author's Notes/Comments:

The first line refers to the sons of Edward IV---Edward V and his younger brother (by three years), Richard.  The claims of both to the crown were set aside by Parliament, in favor of their Uncle, Richard III; who has been accused of murdering them.  I find that preposterous, as he had no need to fear them.  This poem presents an alternative explanation of their disappearance from the Tower of London, while also suggesting some aspects of the life of Edward VI (son of Henry VIII).
