I keep Mrs. Stevens' likeness in a small box,
with other coins, in a drawer, next to my socks.
My collection has not expanded over time;
its centerpiece---a nineteen sixteen mercury dime.

Author's Notes/Comments:
Elsie Kachel Stevens is said to be---and I accept the scholarship as accurate---the model for the Mercury Head on that coinage. They tell me that certain employees of the Hartford Insurance Company, of which Wallace Stevens was a vice president, used to razz him about having Mrs. Stevens' face in their pockets. Apparently, he did not recognize their lame attempts at humor. I wonder how many of them ultimately had to seek other employment.
