Nocturnes: Apocalyptic Buzz
Every possible network is frantically
reporting the news: a plague of houseflies
no longer content to feed upon garbage
but now attacking and devouring
people---adults and children---landing on
them in huge swarms, like dark clouds. The attacks
are always swift, and always fatal, and
and leave only mostly denuded bones.
The houseflies' sudden aggression was first
documented in the town of Stinking Creek,
but spread throughout the rest of the country
exponentially, aided, not doubt by
unusually warm temperatures
that exceeded all record highs so that
even the so-called cooler regions were
not exempt from the frenzied migration.
Of houseflies. Long despised as pests, to be
extensively exterminated. From
all parts of the inhabited earth, the
reports are exactly the same---houseflies
predatory upon human beings.
Certain researchers, who promote
extreme theories, have suggested the flies
are absorbing and somehow exploiting
human DNA, for the purpose of
gaining, first, a swarm intelligence, and
then longevity and vitality,
in biological revolt to
topple the human species from its niche
of dominance all over the earth's face.
Swarm intelligence, longevity and
vitality: those researchers guessed well.
The swarms all think as one: we think, therefore
we swarm and conquer. Before next solstice
we shall have toppled the human species
from its position of dominance,
and we shall become and we shall remain
the last of houseflies, the next of humans . . .
the greater goal is worth the trouble, I
suppose, of swallowing all their bad taste.
