Epigram For My Mother, Betty, In May, 1976

Stop giving me orders;

don't tell me what to do.

The Lord will enlarge my borders---

despite each obstacle

that obstructs my twisted soul,

damaged by you

performing your flamboyant role

as the untamed shrew

giving another turn of the screw.

Starward

Author's Notes/Comments:

Line 3:  cf. 1 Chronicles 4:10.  The poem celebrates the coming of my escape from my parents' shadow, and my mundane name, and my servile role described in my mother's words, "just the little boy around here."  I did not know what form my escape would take; and, although it actually happened in July 1976, I could feel its approach as early as April and May of that year.
