Nocturnes: The Universal Monsters

Frankenstein; The Wolfman; Dracula;

The Mummy; The Creature from the Black Lagoon;
The Phantom of the Opera; and last,

but not least, the Hunchback of Notre Dame:

these are the Universal Monsters.

My neighbor, Doris H---, attempted to shame
my parents for my fervent interest in them;

of which I gave the most ardent expression,

which, Doris H---. described as an obsession
and sign of mental instablity.

This from the neighborhood busybody:

she lacked even a freshman's knowledge

of basic psychology.

Broadcast on Shock Theater, Saturday
afternoons, they piqued my imagination---

aided by Eerie Magazine.

I read ghost stories as finest literature
which Doris H---deemed obscene.
I found, almost by association,
my first exposure to poetry.

Mary Shelley; Bram Stoker; M.R. James;
and Sarban (John Wall, Ambassador)

and Eerie provided the delectation

that helped to ease this only child's

familial isolation.
