At A Sight Of Rome's Burnt Precincts

[after Romans 1:16]

Of Jesus' Gospel, I am not ashamed,

even if all of Rome has been enflamed,

as Troy once was, in a great conflagration:

for which we, who are Christians, have been blamed.

The emperor, himself, recently claimed

to have proof that supports the accusation.

Many, I fear, will be sentenced and killed---

lots of flesh mutilated, much blood spilled.

But even this will make a proclamation

of Gospel faith, held to the final breath:

complete trust in God's Word, sealed by each death.

Through this, some spectator may seek Salvation

(rather than the alternative, damnation):

this is the martyrs' last, earthly vocation.
