Even in statecraft (not within the Church),

and history, the nations have a soul---

it is that ancient people, Israel;

gathered now and (I think) by God's design

into a state that serves as spiritual sign

and conscience.  Now to leave them in a lurch,

is wrong:  they must not be left vulnerable

before the rages of an enemy

that seeks for their demise implacably,

with fury that few human words can tell.

Who blesses or who curses Abraham,

Isaac and Jacob, shall be blessed or cursed

(whether they have been gathered or dispersed)

by God, Who gives a blessing and a damn.
