At Rome's Gate, On The Appian Way

A certain slave, by name of Sparticus,

believed men should not suffer slavery.

Revolting, he led local slaves to free

themselves and others.  This seemed like salvation

to them; but license tainted liberty

and weak wills stooped to tamper with temptation.

High luxury and wealth cause strong addictions

(that highborn Romans felt great consternation,

driven by greed, is fairly obvious).

Thus, Rome objected to expropriation

of its possessions by those called servile

(enslaved).  Freedom was one of many dreams

that Rome, cajoling, crushed in harsh denial.

Hear the cacophony---those dreamers' screams;

those thousands dying in mass crucifixions.

Starward
