I do not get out much in the sunshine:
too occupied running the Mamertine
Prison. Often its problems can confine
me almost as much as our prisoners.
Like I said, I do not much see the sun,
and do not always hear the latest news.
They say that some of Nero's ministers
(perhaps at his conniving) now accuse
the Christians of setting that nasty fire.
One of my contacts says the case lacks proof.
My labors here keep me mostly aloof
from city politics. This pair of Jews---
Christians, sentenced to death of course: each one
is elderly, and seems quite harmless, too.
But Caesar's judges' judgments must come due.
Some live, some die, and each serves the Empire.
