The upright loosened from its tight post-hole:
the whole cross lay intact, empty; the light
of dusk on it. Then cried my Roman soul---
"Lord, how could this---done to You---be made right?"
Author's Notes/Comments:
One of Gustav Dore's illustrations for the Bible depicts the cross, laid intact upon the ground, with the nails nearby, and a robe flung across it, and in the setting sun behind it, the letters IHS. I have loved this picture for over a half century, since I was five. I have long wanted ro write a verse about it.
