Poppies' tears is an old euphemism for the opium derived from the plant, and made into heroin.

Thank you for that comment.  I had always wondered, since I first read the tale about 46 years ago, what Montressor's motive was.  Having passed through a nightmare of my own these last few months, I understand his feelings.
