Your Choice was Mine

You speed excessively

Up the blurry road with me--

In the back clutching the seatbelt

The only safety that I felt

You weave in and out of traffic

To you everything perfect

The jimmy finds the shoulder of the road

And to think then you would have slowed

But no, you jerk back over speed through the light

Praying that I will get through this night

Cutting off people, you don't even think

All of this because you choose to drink

I lost count of how many you had

Almost home, my heart glad

Slam on the breaks, black streaks left behind

Headlights approaching, so bright, going blind

Take a sharp turn, we're now on our street

Once in the drive way our journey complete

You stumble from the driverseat

You can barely stand on your own two feet

Still alive until next time when it happens again

Fearing the next time when--

We get in the car and you attempt to drive

When I was too young to make the choice to stay alive.

Author's Notes/Comments:

My dad use to drink and drive when I was still with him, he never thought of our safety, never thought he might end up killing us both, that was the problem he never thought. I was too young to say I wasn't going to get in the car after he had drank 10-12 beer, his choice was mine. I made a promise to myself, that I would never get into a car with someone after they had been drinking, no matter how much they had. To think I could be dead right now because someone was so thoughtless, or stupid being a word I see more fitting.

i like this one a lot. it really hurts when retrospect brings you to see how thoughtless or -yeah- stupid someone was, and how much damage could have been done. i feel your pain today.

People who drive under any influence should have there license taken away...i know some of my close friends who drive without thinking how much they had...my dad got penalized for drinking in 2 provinces...and now come to think of it, i've done that driving mistake once!! Never shall it happen again to me or close friends...for that i can take control!!

love you hun!!!

that was a great poem very thought provoking. It's got me thinking about how many times i've driven intoxicated or hopped in a car with someone with little or no thought. There's diffently been someone watching over me.

yeah, drinking under any influence isnt cool at all. Anyone who is drunk should NOT drive. no matter what.
Drinking and driving is really dumb. keep up the good work!
