Author's Notes/Comments: 

Imagine my shock: it explains the refusal of pain pills, and the steak dinner on the day the braces were tightened. Never, at any time, did either of my parents acknowledge that braces could be even the least bit painful; explaining it, rather, as my own cowardice and lack of self-control.
