THE UNKNOWN

I was your child or sibling,
I was your husband or wife,
I was your mother or father,
I was all of these who gave their life.

I did what I could
I completed many a deed
I went where I was asked,
In time of great need.

I was one of many,
Who sacrificed all,
For the love of my country,
I was willing to fall.

I was Laid to rest in ceremony,
In this plot on hallowed ground,
Twenty-one guns called their salute,
Even though my name wasn't found.

Author's Notes/Comments:

This poem goes out to those soldiers who were lost, but whose names were never found.
May they rest in peace, and never be forgotten.
POST EDIT:
I edited the 4th line on the 3rd stanza from "My sacrifice was small" to what it reads now because it seems more fitting and sounds less belittling... the ultimate sacrifice is never small

This is a beautiful tribute.

This is a beautiful tribute. Thank you and all those who died for the greatest causes. Unknown soldiers and unlaid to rest at home. Prayers with all the families who must now count the cost may you have strength in the days that follow.
