The Day the Worlds Divided

I hope you know the circumstances

I assume you've seen the signs

Today the skies are clearing slow

And tomorrow they will rise

All the things that keep us close

Will grow brittle underneath

We'll drain each other all our lives

Until there's nothing left to reach

But today the bombs are flying low

And we dodge them with a smirk

When they land and take our limbs

We'll put our eyes to work

The shells we pass make us flinch

But we'll pretend to shake it off

Soon we accept that we cannot win

But we'll deny ourselves the loss

And in the tide of the aftermath

We'll wash our hands in dirt

We'll glance across this field of pain

Without a sense of worth

We'll give each other sour looks

As we drag ourselves abroad

We'll pretend the war had never raged

While the ghosts just egg us on

In no time the smoke will fade

While the hatred is maintained

And we'll find ourselves across the Earth

Where the conflict can't be named

We hope in secret that time will mend

And soothe the savage doubts

We reach out far to speak few words

But are quick to quiet down

Perhaps some day we'll be again

At least close enough to speak

But until the scars fade from sight

There won't be much to see.

You've got to love the irony.
