THE BANYAN TREE

Majestic, you stand by the road side

Watching vehicles as they glide

People, faces as they turn

To see your grandeur and burn

With desire to be so grand

You have stood still and grown

Bringing forth two of your own

From where your roots once clung

Amidst songs tiny sparrows sung

You have come to be known across the land

Cool summer breezes and gusty gales

Eerie nocturnal sounds and ominous wails

You have provided shelter to tiny birds

Tales of sympathy unmatched by words

Picturesque, the work of a magic wand

I had heard him talk about you

You must have known my father too

The old banyan tree he used to say

If only you could speak in a way

Telling me about him, your lost friend

Author's Notes/Comments:

I wrote this poem in rememberance of my late father who left us on this day 12 years ago. This old Banyan tree grows along the road and when we were small he used to tell us about it. The other day when i drove past it i had this urge to write a few verses about it. I have given it a try, it is for you to decide.

I loved this poem. Nostalgic and moving. In each line I can read a longing for the times gone by. Well done Shazi.
