Q1. What is assessment? How and why it is used in the learning process?
Answer:
By the term ‘Assessment’ I understand, collecting and discussing information from different sources in order to develop a clear understanding of what students have understood so far and can we do with their knowledge as a result of their educational experiences.
There are two ways of assessment-
1.
Formative
2.
Summative.
Formative assessment is to monitor student learning to provide continuous ongoing feedback or report that can be used by teachers to improve their teaching styles and for students to improve their learning pattern. More specifically, formative assessments may have the following features-
Formative assessments are generally low stakes, which means that they have minor value. Examples of formative assessments include asking students to:
1.
draw a concept map in class to represent their understanding of a topic
2.
submit one or two sentences identifying the main point of a lecture
3.
Turn in a research proposal for early feedback as a part of the continuous process.
Summative assessment is to evaluate student learning at the end of an instructional unit/chapter/topic by comparing it against some standard or scale.
Summative assessments are often high stakes, which means that they have a high point value. Examples of summative assessments may include the following-s
1.
a midterm exam
2.
class tests
3.
a final year project
4.
a research paper
5.
a formal critiques on others paper
Information from summative assessments can be used formatively when students or teacher use it to guide their efforts and activities in subsequent courses.
Q2. Give an explanation of purposes of assessment. (Write in reflective and respective way).
Answer:
Importance of Assessment for A-level students
For adult students, both types of assessments are highly important. It has been observed in my class that, the attendance of the students in a-level is quite alarming. The teacher must be very vigilant regarding this issue. Because any lacking in the assessments, may hamper their admission or enrollment in their targeted universities. Some of the important application of assessments are mentioned below-
1.
Understanding the topic- Sometimes the students take some subjects whimsically or traditionally or by the pressure of family. If the students loose interest at any subject in these cases, the student will not be able to achieve desired grade. So, by taking formative assessments the mentor can understand the real scenario of the student.
2.
Helps counseling- Some students might be needed counseling at some points where they should work on or give efforts. By taking feedbacks, formative and summative assessment, the teacher can easily identify those areas where the students need counseling. It is really required for the intrapersonal intelligence students.
3.
Improving teaching quality- the mentor may need to change the teaching scheme or methodology to achieve the goal or requirements of the schools. Assessments are the most effective way to work on those points of improvements.
4.
Grade prediction- students of A-level needs their predicted grade in advance for applying in university replacement programs. Then the teachers needs assessments for predict their grades.
5.
Giving recommendation- sometimes the teacher needs to recommend students for some competition, Olympiad, activities. The teacher uses assessments as a useful tool to identify the right students in the right places.
6.
Differentiating students- To improve teaching skills, a teacher needs to differentiate his students according to their capabilities. In this issue, assessment plays a major roll to help mentor.
