বাংলা কবিতা পালা করে চলছে ছক্কা নিক্ষেপ,
দুজ’ন মানুষ যেন অসীম ধৈর্য নিয়ে
জরিপ চালায় একে অন্যকে!
একজন শুধুই জিতে চলে-
অন্যজন হেরে যায় প্রতিবার। তবুও
বিরামহীন খেলে চলে!
এ কেমন দৈব ইশারা? সাপের দংশন
স্পর্শ করতে পারেনি বিজয়ীকে, কখনওই!
আর যে হেরে যায় প্রতিবার?
সাপের দংশনে ক্ষতবিক্ষত! সাতানব্বই থেকে বারো;
তেতাল্লিশ থেকে চার!
তরুও বিরাম নেই!
ঘাম মুছে বার বার আড়চোখে দেখে বিজয়ীকে-
সম্ভাসন জানাবার আগেই আবার হেরে যায় সে।
দু’একটি মই এর সন্ধান করে চলে প্রতিনিয়ত-
পাবে কিনা জানে না!
টলে যায় বুঝি বিশ্বাসের ভিত!
হেরে গিয়ে সান্ত্বনা দেয় নিজেকে-
সে নিজে বর্তমান, আর প্রতিপক্ষ অতীত!

One after the other
The players cast the dice
Opponents look each other
Piercing into their eyes
One player on a winning streak
The other continually loses
Yet the game goes on unabated
The sting of poison snakes
Doesn't affect the winner
The loser down from 97 to 12
Forty-three to four !!
Yet the Game goes on....
Loser wipes sweat..
Eyes his opponent
From corner of his eyes
He loses again and again
Completely loses faith
His faith foundation shaken
He is the "Present"
His opponent is "Past"
