Big Black Dog

You came in growling and mean,

Your eyes so full of fear.

Sitting in a corner, shivering and cold,

My voice I knew you could hear.

I sat by you and spoke kind words,

Then reached out my hand to you.

I felt you give in to my touch,

Each time your trust in me grew.

Then came the day I waited for,

When I hugged you close to me.

I had no doubt in you all along,

Of the sweet soul that you could be.

How sad to draw you close to me,

To see complete trust in your eyes.

Only to lead you by my side,

To your journey up to the skies.

I add you to the list in my heart,

Those brown eyes I won't forget.

I hope you found some comfort now,

You deserved to be a forever pet.

Author's Notes/Comments:

Again, this was written when I volunteered at our local animal shelter and became so attached to every single animal...sometimes I was the only one they trusted enough to walk them to that 'room' where they had to go to sleep.  I no longer work there...it was just too much....
