Dusk to Dawn

Secular Poetry

Silence screamed as night drew near

Creeping, creeping ever closer

Fingers reaching, malice breathing

Closing in on the last light of day.

Shadows lingered in the suffocating gloom

Writhing and twisting in a dance of death.

Bending, breaking, the final rays of light

Dissipated, dissolving silently

Succumbing to the merciless dark.

It enveloped the trees,

Conquered the skies,

Swallowing all life on earth

As a soft, swirling breeze passed by.

It opened it's ever watchful eye

Glaring down as the world fell asleep

Deep in thought and lost in dreams.

Silver moonbeams scoured the earth-

It searched for a hiding-place

Hideously aware of the coming of dawn.

A sudden burst of light

Protruded from behind the mountains.

Wielding it's sharp-edged sword

It attacked the darkness

With a silent cry of rage,

And with one swift stroke

It slew the night.

It illuminated the sweetly slumbering earth

Spreading its soft light across the plains.

It devoured the last of the darkness

As the earth slowly arose from its sleep.

And as it settled into dawn's purest light,

The silence smiled with thankful joy.
