When you pushed the hair back
From my face
And looked deep into my eyes
I think you knew it would be the last time
And all I can think of
Is the word “tender”
Though I never thought
I’d describe a gesture of yours
With a word of that kind
And after that I don’t have
The heart to tell you
That this romance is a little one sided
Yes- I know I could still
Crumble in your arms
Overcome with memories
Of the days when only you
Could hold me just the right way
And no one has ever done it since
But we both know by now
That it will never be
So when you hugged me goodbye
Once wasn’t enough
And you could barely stand
To let me go
Fingers lingering on my shoulder blades
Pleading with your eyes
Yes- I can see them in the dark
And I have to answer
Albeit silently
Oh my God I’m sorry
But it just can never be
