Girl Behind the Counter

A lobby full of patients while a young girl chores

Inside an ancient beige counter and glass walls

Movements are all programmed like a robot

Another typical dreadful day grinding at work

Tap, tap, tap echoes through the opaque glass

Annoyed, she spins around and sees a little one

Who has to stand on his toes to see over the edge

Quite a young boy, perhaps in the first grade

They stare at each other until she becomes irritated

Silence is interrupted when she asks, "Yes?"

He squels, "Hello, may I have a piece of paper?"

With a raised eyebrow she hands him his request

This does not stop the child from asking again,

"Well I'll need something to write with, got anything?"

She releases a loud sigh and fetches a pen from the cup

And places it in the small hands of this demanding childs

Still the boy stands there with an unsatisfied face

"This pen is black but, can I also have a red pen?"

An artificial smile appears while she fishes him a red pen

Once satisfied she turns from him to continue her work

And just as she falls back into her mindless groove

Another acute tap, tap, tap, is heard from behind

Frustrated, she swings around but no one is there

No rug rat, just two pens and a paper on the ledge

Enraged she collects the items and to her surprise

Is the drawing of a smiling girl with a big red heart

The words, "Please smile more, you're pretty"

She pauses, exhales and displays an honest grin
