Leaf buds swell on greening limbs
Life blood drips from my heart
Scented air around growth swirls
When did this sorrow start?
Tulip cups raise full faces
Life empties of its force
Crocuses merrily scatter
The world careens off course.
Happy robins peck and pull
My sad thoughts shrivel me
Singing springtime youth is here -
Such joy midst misery.
For death's made its appearance
Clad in his cape and hood
My love shall not know springtime
Ah, would but that he could!
