My friend JBO told me that:
Haiti was the only successful slave rebellion in history (if one doesn't count
the nonviolent accretion of small victories in other countries which add up to
a big victory). Spartacus' slave rebellion in Rome had resulted in Gaius Julius
Caesar's order resulting in the crucifixion of several
thousand slaves.
As a result, Haiti became the first nation in the Western Hemisphere to ban slavery.
France lost 40 to 50 generals in the rebellion. Haiti had been the richest
French colony. As a result of the victory of the slaves, Haiti became the first
nation ruled by blacks. The US responded by seizing Haiti's gold reserves
in US banks.
The slave revolt in Haiti was a factor in the Louisiana Purchase because
the French treasury was exhausted by fighting against the slaves as well as
fighting against England.
I didn't know this about
I didn't know this about Haiti. It's always heartening to learn about stunning victories over oppression. It doesn't surprise me that America responded with such blatant greed and support for a soulless, inhuman system they ruthlessly clung to themselves. Thanks for sharing.
