Living Halfway

We've been here - it's all too familiar now.

Fanciful notions have led me astray

To thoughts we two might go deeper somehow,

Though I know it could never be that way.

Our union's a battle we compete in

Till I remind myself to lay down arms.

I realize you'll never have both feet in

So surrender to nights of short-lived charms.

I know that morning will bring fog for you

Even as a clear day peaks through the blinds.

I'll wake to greet the sunlight shining through

While you lie strangled by the tie that binds.

My spark of joy becomes a cloudy day

'Cause being with you means living halfway.
