I Could Never Laugh at You

Softening by consequence, not design,
Those time-worn defenses soon start to fade,
Imposing limits to which you resign.
They are evidence of the price you paid
To allow me the chance I had today
Of coming here to share this time with you.
I smile and listen to what you say
Not moving to speak until you are through.
I know that some days may challenge your strength;
They may be too much to face on your own,
So know that I am always at arm's length -
I should be ashamed to leave you alone.
In my eyes you have seen and done it all.
Hold on to me. There is no need to fall.
