Grandma’s house, a place full of peace. Yes, that’s the way I remember it. My uncles laughing, and laughing at the dining table, my cousins and my sister watching some cartoons, and eating cereal, and, of course, my aunt, my mother, and my grandma, cooking something really good in the kitchen while talking. This was a peaceful scene for me, it really made me happy, and the sweet music that wrapped all together, just makes it better. On the corner of the living room, there it was, a huge stereo, with two cassette decks. To the side of the stereo, a very tall shelf with my grandmother’s music collection, which was composed mostly by cassettes and vinyls, although she had some CDs. From Flamenco, to Rock & Roll, and to Hip Hop… The whole music spectrum is on that shelf, and my Grandma loves it. There is something about that shelf that reminds me of my life, I literally grew up listening to that shelf. Every two weeks or so my grandmother will lend me one of her tapes or records for me to listen. Some of them I loved, and some of them I hated, or didn’t appreciate them due to my age. However, to this day, my grandma always helps me to understand and to feel the music, she is a huge audiophile, and she turned me into one myself. I discovered “the power of music”, as she says, very early in my childhood, and I knew right away that no matter what I was facing, what problems I was having, or what I was feeling, the music will be there, as well as my grandma. The association is inevitable, grandma and music will go hand in hand until the end of times. Music is our bond, music is what we love the most. My cousins and my sister rarely get it, they often get bored while listening to my grandma’s stories. They know that the moment my grandma sits down next to the shelf, and grab her guitar, she will start to tell music related tales as well as introducing us to new artists, songs or complete music genres. The shelf is a real treasure for my grandma and me, in fact, I couldn’t put a price on it, it’s just the best sonic experience through decades and decades of sound evolution. I’m just glad that I can share this shelf with my grandma.
