The Odyssey

Better Homes and Gardens made a deal with Wal-Mart in some long-before-time and one stocked the other with customers and shelf space. That would be of no significance to anyone at all, unless they, like me, were strolling the aisles of their local hegemony and did find their gaze captivated by such a beautiful creature as the Better Homes & Gardens 16 inch Retro 3-Speed Metal Pedestal Fan, Black.  And by beautiful creature, my meaning is β€˜an iron-bound merciless beast of prey, as beautiful as a chrome tiger pacing its enclosure.’

The silver fan blades sat still behind the wire cage encircling them. The cord was unplugged from the wall. The potential for movement rested in the heavy motor; it was thick and dense and reminescent of the engines of B-20 bombers.

It sounded like a plane engine when it started; the whole affair whined and hummed with that authentic, acoustic quality of heavy metal dashing the air. It was a two-hand lift, thick as a telephone pole and heavy as bad news. But once it achieved liftoff speed, even Tennessee summers kindly dipped their hats and strolled off yonder with their humidity and their heat. It was a stately black and chrome, shiny and modern, and was one of my proudest possessions, which ought to convey to my esteemed reader just how dire the straits really were.

". . .  thick as a telephone pole and heavy as bad news. But once it achieved liftoff speed, even Tennessee summers kindly dipped their hats and strolled off yonder with their humidity and their heat."

Some knockout wordcrafting that took a small slice of Americana and turned it into cleverly understated social commentary and pure pleasure. Score!
