Near The Tomb, An Old Servant's Sorrow

The Romans crucify men every day,

somewhere.  But never, in my years of service

to Joseph, have I seen a body mangled

and mutilated in that ghastly way.

In His hair was a crown of thorns entangled.

Who puts forth so much effort to be cruel?

His backside had been scourged thoroughly raw.

Somewhere, in some detail of Roman law

and all their many policies, some rule

ought to prevent that.  Was death not enough?---

that He should suffer tortures that are stuff

of nightmares?  Does this not make you quite nervous

that such despicable acts could be done

to Jesus, Whom we know to be God's Son?
